Road collision data for journalists
When a reader calls a road dangerous, or a council announces a safety scheme, you need the collision record for that exact stretch, not the county total. Pro gets it in a couple of minutes.

Report it fairly
- Small numbers jump around. On a single road, a rise from two collisions to four is not a trend. Compare averages over several years.
- It counts collisions, not risk. STATS19 has no traffic volumes, so a busy road will usually record more collisions than a quiet one.
- It runs a year behind. The latest validated year is 2025. Figures for this year are provisional and are not part of the open data.
- Only police-reported injuries. Damage-only crashes are not included, and many minor injuries are never reported.
What a study looks like
A study collects every recorded injury collision in the area and years you choose, totals them by year and severity, and picks out the road users and conditions involved. Each collision keeps its own record, with the date, time, severity, vehicles, casualties, road, junction, light, weather and road surface.

How it compares
A formal extract from the highway authority is the authoritative record, and sometimes you will need one. Councils charge for each request, usually per location, per road or per radius. These are the published fees we have checked on councils' own websites.
| Highway authority | Published fee | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole | From £190 + VAT | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| Bradford | £182.40 (£152 + VAT) for a basic request | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| Devon | £195 + VAT for a PDF plot and report (commercial requests) | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| Dorset | £130 + VAT per location plot; £160 + VAT per collision details report per area | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| Gloucestershire | £103 + VAT per collision location plot | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| Hertfordshire | Quote on request (cost recovery) | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| Kent | £206.40 for 3 years or £368.40 for 5 years, including VAT (2026 to 2027) | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| North Yorkshire | £80 to £480, depending on the radius (200m to 48km) | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| Suffolk | From £105 + VAT per road | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| West Northamptonshire | £60 per year per section of highway | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
| Worcestershire | From £243.80 (no VAT charged) for commercial requests | Council website Checked 14 Oct 2026 |
Turnaround
Few councils publish one. Hertfordshire, for example, says standard requests are delivered within 10 working days of the purchase order. A Pro study is ready as soon as you have chosen the area.

What Pro is, and what it isn't
Pro is built on the Department for Transport's published STATS19 data: every personal injury collision on a public road in Great Britain that was reported to the police. The latest validated year is 2025. It is the right tool for screening sites, feasibility work and early-stage analysis.
Where the highway authority asks for its own extract, often for a Transport Assessment or a road safety audit, you will still need to request one. Pro tells you what that extract is likely to show before you pay for it.
Not in the published data
- Contributory factors. The causes the attending officer recorded are left out of the open data.
- Officers' descriptions. There is no narrative of what happened, and no names or registrations.
- The current year. Provisional, unvalidated records are held by the police and the highway authority until the annual release.
- Damage-only and unreported collisions. Only injury collisions the police knew about are included, and the Department for Transport notes that many non-fatal casualties are never reported to the police.
- Northern Ireland. STATS19 covers England, Scotland and Wales only.

How should I credit the data?
Credit the Department for Transport's road casualty statistics (STATS19), which are published under the Open Government Licence. You are welcome to mention CrashView as the tool you used.
Why can't I see this year's collisions?
The Department for Transport publishes each year's validated data the following autumn. Provisional figures for the current year are held by the police and highway authorities and are not part of the open data.
Where does the data come from?
The Department for Transport's STATS19 dataset: every personal injury collision on a public road in Great Britain that was reported to the police, published as open data under the Open Government Licence. The latest validated year in CrashView is 2025.
Is a Pro study the same as a council collision extract?
No. It uses the same police-reported collisions, but the published open data leaves out contributory factors, the officer's description of what happened and the current year's provisional records, all of which a highway authority can add to a formal extract. Use Pro to screen sites and see what an extract is likely to show. Where the highway authority asks for its own extract, you will still need to request one.
Does it cover Northern Ireland?
No. STATS19 covers England, Scotland and Wales. Collisions in Northern Ireland are recorded separately by the PSNI.
Can I use the results in a report for a client?
The underlying STATS19 data is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0, which allows commercial reuse as long as you acknowledge the source, for example: "Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0."
How does the free trial work?
You get 14 days of Pro without entering a card. When the trial ends you drop back to the free plan unless you subscribe. If you subscribe during the trial, the first payment waits until the trial ends.
Can I cancel?
Yes, at any time from the billing page. You keep Pro until the end of the period you have paid for.
Do I get invoices?
Every payment produces a receipt and an invoice you can download from the billing page, with your company name, address and VAT number if you add them at checkout.
