Evidence for road safety campaigns, parish councils and Speedwatch groups

When you ask the council for a crossing, a lower speed limit or traffic calming, the first thing they look at is the collision record. Pro lets you see it first and present it clearly.

Make the case with the record

  • Your road, not the county total

Draw the stretch through your village, or a circle round the school gate, and see every police-reported injury collision there over the years you choose.

  • The people most at risk

Separate the people killed or seriously injured, and the pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists among them.

  • Something to hand over

Download a PDF for your councillors, the highways team or the parish newsletter, and the records as a spreadsheet if someone wants to check them.

  • Closures on your roads

Pro also sends closure alerts for up to 50 roads and 10 areas, so you hear about works and incidents in your patch.

Start with the free pages

Before you pay for anything, look up your area on CrashView. The road, town, postcode and highway authority pages are free. Pro adds your own study areas, filters and exports.

Councils decide where to spend road safety money using their own collision data and criteria, so a collision record supports a case rather than settling it. STATS19 only counts injury collisions reported to the police: speeding, near misses and damage-only crashes are not in it, so bring Speedwatch logs, speed surveys and residents' accounts too.

What a study looks like

A study collects every recorded injury collision in the area and years you choose, totals them by year and severity, and picks out the road users and conditions involved. Each collision keeps its own record, with the date, time, severity, vehicles, casualties, road, junction, light, weather and road surface.

  • CSV, Excel, GeoJSON and PDF exports

How it compares

A formal extract from the highway authority is the authoritative record, and sometimes you will need one. Councils charge for each request, usually per location, per road or per radius. These are the published fees we have checked on councils' own websites.

Turnaround

Few councils publish one. Hertfordshire, for example, says standard requests are delivered within 10 working days of the purchase order. A Pro study is ready as soon as you have chosen the area.

What Pro is, and what it isn't

Pro is built on the Department for Transport's published STATS19 data: every personal injury collision on a public road in Great Britain that was reported to the police. The latest validated year is 2025. It is the right tool for screening sites, feasibility work and early-stage analysis.

Where the highway authority asks for its own extract, often for a Transport Assessment or a road safety audit, you will still need to request one. Pro tells you what that extract is likely to show before you pay for it.

Not in the published data

  • Contributory factors. The causes the attending officer recorded are left out of the open data.
  • Officers' descriptions. There is no narrative of what happened, and no names or registrations.
  • The current year. Provisional, unvalidated records are held by the police and the highway authority until the annual release.
  • Damage-only and unreported collisions. Only injury collisions the police knew about are included, and the Department for Transport notes that many non-fatal casualties are never reported to the police.
  • Northern Ireland. STATS19 covers England, Scotland and Wales only.

Questions

Is £49 a month worth it for a parish council?

Many groups only need the data while they prepare a case. You can subscribe for a month, run the studies and download the PDFs and spreadsheets you need, then cancel. The public road, town and area pages on CrashView stay free.

Our road has lots of near misses but few recorded collisions. Will Pro help?

STATS19 only records collisions where someone was injured and the police were told, so near misses, speeding and damage-only crashes are not in it. A low count is still useful evidence, but pair it with speed surveys, Speedwatch logs and residents' accounts.

Where does the data come from?

The Department for Transport's STATS19 dataset: every personal injury collision on a public road in Great Britain that was reported to the police, published as open data under the Open Government Licence. The latest validated year in CrashView is 2025.

Is a Pro study the same as a council collision extract?

No. It uses the same police-reported collisions, but the published open data leaves out contributory factors, the officer's description of what happened and the current year's provisional records, all of which a highway authority can add to a formal extract. Use Pro to screen sites and see what an extract is likely to show. Where the highway authority asks for its own extract, you will still need to request one.

Does it cover Northern Ireland?

No. STATS19 covers England, Scotland and Wales. Collisions in Northern Ireland are recorded separately by the PSNI.

Can I use the results in a report for a client?

The underlying STATS19 data is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0, which allows commercial reuse as long as you acknowledge the source, for example: "Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0."

How does the free trial work?

You get 14 days of Pro without entering a card. When the trial ends you drop back to the free plan unless you subscribe. If you subscribe during the trial, the first payment waits until the trial ends.

Can I cancel?

Yes, at any time from the billing page. You keep Pro until the end of the period you have paid for.

Do I get invoices?

Every payment produces a receipt and an invoice you can download from the billing page, with your company name, address and VAT number if you add them at checkout.
